Structuring Success with Cooperative Learning

Cooperative small group learning is a pedagogy based on cooperating to learn and learning to cooperate. When small groups of students work together towards a common goal they cooperate to learn. When they watch the teacher model how to criticize ideas and not the owners of these ideas, they learn to cooperate. For students to start cooperating effectively means a change of values and habits. For you to structure, use and model cooperation will often mean a change of values and habits more profound and quicker than the transformation of your students.

Cooperative learning is not a series of recipes. Instead it is a strategy built on the transformation of values. You are structuring success for your students when you communicate your beliefs which are fundamental to the establishment of a climate conducive to learning and specifically to learning in cooperation with others.
